Pokémon GO has finally released another update and this one has some good changes that look promising for all trainers. Most of these changes have to do with the UI and interface with promises of things to come. Here is what has been noted so far:

ANDROID WHAT’S NEW

  • Added a dialog to remind Trainers that they should not play while traveling above a certain speed; Trainers will have to indicate they aren’t the driver
  • Fixed a bug that prevented ”Nice,” ”Great,” and “Excellent” Poké Ball throws from awarding the appropriate XP bonuses
  • Enabled the ability for Trainers to change their nickname one time, so please choose your new nickname wisely
  • Resolved issues with the battery saver mode on iOS and re-enabled the feature
  • Other fixes

APPLE WHAT’S NEW

  • Added a dialog to remind Trainers that they should not play while traveling above a certain speed. Trainers must confirm they are not driving in order to continue playing
  • Made improvements to the accuracy of a curveball throw
  • Fixed a bug that prevented ”Nice,” ”Great,” and “Excellent” Poké Ball throws from awarding the appropriate experience bonuses
  • Fixed achievements showing incorrect Medal icons
  • Enabled the ability for Trainers to change their nickname one time, so please choose your new nickname wisely
  • Resolved issues with the battery saver mode and re-enabled this feature
  • Added visuals of Team leaders – Candela, Blanche and Spark
  • We’re currently testing a variation of the “Nearby Pokémon” feature with a subset of users. During this period you may see some variation in the nearby Pokémon UI.
  • Minor text fixes

Undocumented Changes

  • Sightings feature renamed. Grass added.
  • Major Text Changes

Here is a slighting bigger breakdown of what is going on with more explanations and things to come:

The Awesome

New Tracking System

“We’re currently testing a variation of the “Nearby Pokémon” feature with a subset of users. During this period you may see some variation in the nearby Pokémon UI.” – Niantic, Full Text

We’ll post more details as soon as we have them, but for now, see below for what we know.

Battery Saver (iOS)

Batter Saver appears to be back for iOS trainers! (With some extra bug fixes)

XP Bonuses Restored

Throwing ‘Nice,’ ‘Great,’ and ‘Excellent’ throws has now been fixed to award XP. Also, you can now earn both curve and nice/great/excellent XP bonuses! (Thanks/u/veragest )

One-Time Name Change

Every trainer is now allowed to change their username once in case you were so excited to sign into Pokemon GO the first time that you picked something idiotic. Unfortunately, it appears that many of the usernames that were mysteriously taken when the game was first new appear to still be in use. But still a nice addition.

The Journal

Egg hatching now appears in the journal!

The Obvious

New popup warnings

Trainers are now warned not to play above a certain speed, and in fact have to ‘confirm’ they are not the driver while moving above a speed threshold. Interesting.

Under the Hood

(We’re digging into the code to see the full changes, travelers – keep checking back. We’ll update as we confirm information)

Nearby Scanner

The ‘nearby’ scanner has received a little facelift. Here are some shots of it in action:

It also appears that the issue of ghost ‘mons in the nearby scanner is resolved! Pokemon appear to be removed from the scanner when they are out of range. Finally!

Finally, the ‘preview’ of the Nearby scanner (the little tab that shows the 3 ‘nearest’ while in map view) now reads left to right instead of being flipped – a longstanding bug.

It’s possible there are changes under the hood for how tracking works. Stay tuned for official confirmation!
