New Pokémon Go Update is Finally Here

- in News

Now that the holidays have come and gone, Niantic appears to be back on track to release a new update every other week. The newest update is arriving today and it’s bringing a few changes:

Pokémon GO is in the process of being updated to version 0.53.1 for Android and 1.23.1 for iOS devices. Below are some release notes and comments from our development team.

  • Updated Apple Watch to display Eggs obtained from PokéStops
  • Changed distance tracking to better account for GPS drift
  • Minor text fixes.

According to Heavy, the GPS drift is the biggest change to the game:

The more significant update is that the distance tracking has been changed to, as the patch notes say, “better account for GPS drift.” GPS drift occurs when the game registers you as moving when you actually aren’t, and players would often take advantage of this in order to rack up distance traveled while sitting at work or school. Now, it seems, Niantic has fixed this, and GPS drift will no longer occur.

That’s not the most exciting news but hopefully this GPS fix will also help with better distance tracking. Heavy also gives us some insight into the newest update that will surely lift your spirits:

However, it should be noted that these updates often tweak things without making mention of that fact in the patch notes. In the past, it has often been the case that Niantic does not say in their notes that they have fixed a glitch, but players soon realize that the update did exactly that. Also, these updates often contain code that clues us into what the game company is planning, such as when players noticed references to “buddy” Pokemon in an update before that feature was even announced. Fans have not yet had the chance to closely examine this update’s code, but stay tuned for more information.

One Reddit user also pointed out that this update could mean bigger and better things in the future:

It’s easy to assume they’ve done nothing but it’s much more likely that they’ve been working on something not ready to fully release yet – Gen 2, new features etc.

This update will most likely lead to bigger updates and features in the future. Just be patient, Niantic is working on trading, player vs. player battles, Generation 2 Pokemon and more so stay updated!
