Niantic Announces New Capture Bonus, Increases Odds of Catching Rare Pokémon

- in News

Niantic announced on Wednesday that there was a new feature coming to Pokemon Go. This feature is called Capture Bonuses which means players will earn medals for catching certain types of Pokemon. Here is Niantic’s official announcement:

“We want to give you a sneak peek of a feature coming soon to Pokémon GO. We are adding a new feature which grants a catch bonus when you earn medals based on catching certain types of Pokémon (Kindler, Psychic, Gardener, etc.). These new bonuses will give you a better chance of capturing Pokémon with a related type. For example, as you reach a higher tier for the Kindler Medal, your bonus to catch Fire-type Pokémon such as Charmander, Vulpix and Ponyta increases.

Trainers can work their way to a new tier by catching many Pokémon of the same type. If a Pokémon has multiple types, your bonus will be the average of your bonuses for each type. For example, Pidgey is both Normal and Flying type. Your bonus in this case would be the average of your Normal-type and Flying-type bonuses.”

This new feature will allow trainers to specialize in catching specific types. According to Pokémon Go Hub, here’s what we know about the tiers:

Medals come in three Tiers

  • Bronze medal for capturing 10 Pokemon of same Type
    • Awards +1 Type catch bonus
  • Silver medal for capturing 50 Pokemon of same Type
    • Awards +2 Type catch bonus
  • Gold medal for capturing 200 Pokemon of same Type
    • Awards +3 Type catch bonus

The best thing about this update is that all of the medals are named after the Trainer Classes from the original games.

Schoolkid Normal 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Black Belt Fighting 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Bird Keeper Flying 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Punk Girl Poison 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Ruin Maniac Ground 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Hiker Rock 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Bug Catcher Bug 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Hex Maniac Ghost 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Depot Agent Steel 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Kindler Fire 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Swimmer Water 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Gardener Grass 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Rocker Electric 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Psychic Psychic 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Skier Ice 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Dragon Tamer Dragon 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon
Fairy Tale Girl Fairy 10 / 50 /200 Pokemon

We don’t know when this update is coming but it’s good to know that Niantic is determined to give the game new features to keep it interesting and fun for everyone. Now it’s time to ask yourself the question: what kind of trainer do you want to be?

Pokemon Go Hub
  • What do they mean by “bonus to catch”? Does this mean that (1) players with the gold Kindler medal are more likely to encounter fire types? Or does it mean that (2) fire types are less likely to escape the pokeball? If the answer is 1 then it’s the worst update ever.

I have captured over 1000 flying types. You know what I don’t need anymore of? That’s right, I don’t need anymore flying types so why would they give me a bonus to catch more flying types? You know what I do need a bonus for catching? I need a bonus for ice types because I only got 10 of those so far.

This update is clearly meant to slow the progress of players to prevent us from catching them all. If they wanted to help then they would give us a bonus for catching the types that we DON’T already have gold medals for. I hope that at the very least they will give us the option to turn this feature off.
