It’s safe to say that most users were understandably upset when it was revealed that multiplayer battling was not a part of Pokémon Go. In the original games, battling is how you level up and evolve your Pokémon. In Pokémon Go, however, we’re left scrounging for candies in order to level up. Is a battle mode feature ever going to be a part of Pokémon Go? Here’s what we know.
According to GameSpot, Niantic Labs has been toying with the idea of adding a multiplayer battle mode feature. Niantic’s Archit Bhargava said that multiplayer mode could be around the corner:
“The multiplayer aspect is still something we’re exploring, we’re still trying to figure out what’s the best way to do that. So far we’ve learned that multiplayer battles are a lot of fun. When two people from different teams show up at a rival gym, if they collaborate and both have their Pokémon deployed to battle at the same time, they can take down a stronger gym faster.”
Pokémon gym battles leave a lot to be desired especially considering that you’re not exactly battling against another player. In the original trailer for Pokémon Go, multiplayer battle mode and trading were both definitely alluded to (Niantic Labs CEO John Hanke confirmed that trading was coming soon) so maybe Pokémon battles aren’t too far away.
“Battling is a category that we do best at Pokémon, after all. It’s important to really carefully consider any feature that may increase the difficulty and raise the barrier to entry for more casual users.”
Everyone seems to be on board with the idea, so why not just make it a reality already?
